Major waste in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the wastes mainly are plastic, paper and metal, which come from construction, commercial, industrial and domestic.

Disposal of plastic

There are two ways of disposal of solid waste: incineration and landfilling. In Hong Kong, since incineration is expensive and it pollutes the air, its more common to use landfilling.

Degradable of plastic

Degradable plastic means it can be decomposed by the micro-organisms, therefore it means these plastic can be recycled. Mainly, there are three types of degradable plastic: biopolymer, photodegradable plastic and synthetic biodegradable plastics. Nowadays, there is a coding system to identity the types of plastics so that they can be sorted more effectively.

The 4R policy

4R policy is four principle of waste reduction. They are reduce, recycle, reuse and replace.

Addition--- Programmes of reducing solid waste

In Hong Kong, there are many programmes to reduce waste. For instance, the Dry and Wet Waste Separation Pilot Programme, Mobile Phone Battery Recovery and Recycling Programme and Trial Recovery Programme for Computers and Electrical Appliances shows the details of. All of these follow the four principles--- reduce, recycle, reuse and replace.
